| Produktbeschreibung (22275746): In the first three centuries A.D., in a fertile district of Roman Egypt called the Fayum, a diverse community of Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Syrians, Libyans, Nubians, and Jews flourished. These people, and many of their contemporaries throughout the Nile Valley, embalmed the bodies of their dead and then placed over the faces portraits painted on wooden panels or linen. These paintings, today known as Fayum, or mummy, portraits, were created to preserve the memory of each individual. The Fayum portraits are by far the most important body of portraiture to have survived antiquity. Reproduced in this arresting book are some 180 of the finest of the more than 1,000 extant images - of men, women, and children, young and old, plain and beautiful - all of whom seem uncannily alive. A few of these faces have become familiar to scholars and museum-goers, but as a whole they have been neglected by art historians and will be new to most readers. | | >>> Jetzt bei buecher.de - (Teil1) ansehen oder für EUR 64.95 bestellen! |

| Produktbeschreibung (23148175): In the second half of the 19th century, China appeared as the sick man of Asia, rocked by recurrent revolts and huge natural disasters, ruled by an anachronistic imperial system and humiliated by foreign invasions. Karl Marx saw it as bound to disintegrate, like ´any mummy carefully preserved in a hermetically sealed coffin´. The first half of the 20th century was even worse, culminating in fourteen years of invasion by Japan, four years of civil war and three decades of chaotic, oppressive rule by Mao Zedong that killed tens of millions. Now, at the start of the 21st century, China is a major global force, booming economically and confident that it holds the keys to a future in which it will rival the United States. It is impossible to understand modern China without understanding the country´s terrible recent past and Jonathan Fenby´s magnificent new book is the essential work. The Penguin History of Modern China is both a brilliant narrative, crammed with surprising and interest ing stories, and a profound study of the nature of political power and its abuse. | | >>> Jetzt bei buecher.de - Topseller ansehen oder für EUR 16.95 bestellen! |

Who´s Afraid of the Teddy Bear´s Picnic? (buecher.de - (Teil2)) | Produktbeschreibung (22041181): Mummy Robins was the only person to whom I felt close and who in some sense helped me to feel valued, but also made me an object of envy and hatred with other children. Under the circumstances my gravitation towards my brothers was inevitable. Touch and comfort would have been important to all of us, however it came about because of the lack of warmth in our environment. I found out many years later that my brother Joe had already been sexually abused by a member of staff in the children´s home, and therefore had a precocious knowledge of sexual behaviour. I am not sure whether Dennis had also been abused. I find it incredible that the staff were unaware of the physical abuse that was already taking place when my brothers and I went on home visits. We all must have had bruises and marks on our bodies. Corporal punishment was common in those days, but this was at unacceptable level in any time. Perhaps the staff did not want the trouble that it would cause. I think that the culture in the children´s home was such that children reporting abuse were considered to be telling lies. | | >>> Jetzt bei buecher.de - (Teil2) ansehen oder für EUR 16.95 bestellen! |
