Lange Zeit wurde diese gekennzeichnet durch den Typus der modernen Klein- oder Kernfamilie nach Parsons. Im Vordergrund der typischen Familienform in modernen Industriegesellschaften steht dabei das Zusammenleben von Vater, Mutter und einem oder mehreren leiblichen Kindern. Ein weiteres Merkmal der so genannten ´´Normalfamilie´´ ist die klare Aufgaben- und Rollenverteilung zwischen den Ehepartnern. Bis in die 70er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts war das Modell der Klein- bzw. Kernfamilie unumstritten. Der stetige Wandel verdeutlicht jedoch, dass dieser enge Familienbegriff der aktuellen Situation nicht mehr gerecht wird. ´´Da gibt es schockierende Entwicklungen: Wilde Ehen, Ehen ohne Trauschein, Zunahme der Einpersonenhaushalte im Quadrat, Alleinerziehende, allein herumirrende Elternteile...´´, erklärte Beck in seinem Eröffnungsvortrag auf dem 25. deutschen Soziologentag. Spätestens hier wird klar, dass eine breitere Definition des Begriffs ,Familie´ zum Tragen kommen muss. Nave-Herz zeigt auf, dass die Institution Familie vor allem durch folgende drei Merkmale und Funktionen gekennzeichnet wird: a) Eine biologisch- soziale Doppelnatur, die durch die Reproduktions- und Sozialisationsfunktion zum Ausdruck kommt. b) Ein besonderes Kooperations- und Solidaritätsverhältnis mit spezifischen Rollenstrukturen, -definitionen und -bezeichnungen. c) Die Generationsdifferenzierung wie zum Beispiel Vater- Kind- Verhältnis, Mutter- Kind- Verhältnis und Eltern- Kind- Verhältnis. Fragt man nun nach der aktuellen Situation der Familien in Deutschland kommen zunächst demographische und binnenfamiliale Veränderungen, sowie Veränderungen im Familienzyklus zum Tragen, die in den folgenden Abschnitten näher erläutern werden. In den Erklärungen zur Struktur der Familie setzt sich die Theorie der Differenzierung privater Lebensformen immer mehr durch.
